Who pays? People who want to be in creative industries..like me.
Currently a Media Arts major, people like me dread the day when we’ll stop being students who live off of torrents, and have to fork over a grand or more to actually legally sell our stuff. :-/
I have the CS4 Collection legally free from my college for being on a course which requires it. (Though the course fee most probably makes up for that, so in a way I have bought it >-> )
Well actually, not quite. A child CAN purchase a copy of photoshop, but most can’t afford it. Most parents seem to think that once they or their child buy a computer the expenses are over and there’s nothing else to be bought. Now, as suggested when I mentioned the child buying the computer, he/she could “just” get a job, yet many parents expect this money will go towards other aspects of their education and having the child support their own weight on top of things and so for these people even the education discount version is not really affordable – we all know the full $999 is ridiculous yet even $150 is a bit hard on a kid who’s scraping together $30 or so for lunches every week.
Um, lots of people use Photoshop. And it’s expensive. And it’s nice as a freelancer to know there’s one less to worry about (ie your cracked serial booting you off in the middle of the day).
Finally bought the real thing after years of (yes, fulfilling) piracy, SO HAPPY!
I used to feel this way, but the thing is, if you’re actually a professional who needs Photoshop, it only takes one or two jobs to pay for itself.
Not only will it feel good to be operating with legit software, but you won’t have to deal with potential unsafe cracks or websites. And if you do use it for business, it’s a sweet tax write-off.
I think it would be great if adobe would give us “loner-learners” a break and just give us a longer trial period.
(if you can master photoshop…you can make a ton of money, and so who cares if you borrow it during the learning curve? When you start to make an income you can buy it!)
I know all you nihilists are our there saying you need to buy it, and thats the way this American capitalist economy works – the truth is that from a business standpoint it makes great sense to make your software available for piracy.
It really is just a new form of promotion…embrace the future. Microsoft even endorses this marketing policy. If any company really wanted to, it wouldn’t be that hard to completey make sure that 99% of all software copies were correctly registerd.

Pay? For software? Who does that?
March 24th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
lol so awesome! someone else actually bought it too!
March 24th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
I bought software once. Made me feel dirty and was definitely not worth it.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
Yeah, rich fat cat software engineers. I’ll never give them any of my hard earned cash.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
I buy thousands of copies of Windows operating systems and burn them.

I relate so much to this comic it’s not even funny.
March 24th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
Lol you payed for Photoshop? I pirated that at 14!
March 24th, 2010 at 6:15 pm
I remember the first copy of software I actually paid for. Made me feel all grown up.
March 24th, 2010 at 6:36 pm
Use Gimp, it’s free.
March 24th, 2010 at 7:22 pm
I dont understand this on any level.
A child can purchase a copy of photoshop. Actually it would be easier, eg: educational discount etc.
If its for a job then wouldnt the company buy you PS. unless its freelance, actually dont know many people still using PS anymore.

Gimp is just the same as Photoshop, then same way a metal hook is the same as a hand
March 24th, 2010 at 9:46 pm
crazzyy
Love pshop – especially the family (5 user) version
March 25th, 2010 at 3:04 am
So so true.
March 25th, 2010 at 5:49 am
Do people not realize why PS costs so much? How many man hours does it take to create software like this!

Ooohh…. do you make your comics in Photoshop?
March 25th, 2010 at 7:51 am
Hmmm…. Never heard Pay for… and Software in the same sentence… o_O And as far as Gimp goes that program is a pain in the ass……

GimpPS
March 25th, 2010 at 8:18 am
ACK! it filtered the “does not equal” symbol. Gimp does not equal PS
March 25th, 2010 at 8:40 am
PPfffff….. no one ‘buys’ photoshop…
March 25th, 2010 at 9:47 am
First, this comic is great and tragically true in my case.
Second, http://thenextweb.com/lifehacks/2010/03/24/blow-sneak-peak-photoshop-5/
Photoshop 5 is retarded. I feel like the 100s of hours I’ve spent in CS4 mean nothing now.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:42 pm
Yeh its expensive
April 4th, 2010 at 11:01 am
You are all missing the point. This strip is not about how expensive Photoshop is.
April 4th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
As a programmer, I feel bad about using pirated stuff. Lately, I’ve just been finding free versions though my school and software reps.
April 4th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
My version of adulthood is photoshopping a wife and kids into my old pics
April 4th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
Even I am an adult, I still download the software for “free” lol
April 4th, 2010 at 1:48 pm
Why would you need photoshop when you only draw stick figures?
April 4th, 2010 at 3:41 pm
ha ha ha that is brilliant

Being proud for pirating stuff is lame.
June 1st, 2010 at 6:58 pm
you are professional.
July 25th, 2010 at 6:53 am
I need it now, how can I get it!
January 6th, 2011 at 12:43 am
I think you really did a great job with the cartoon and the photoshop can’t do it better than you did it
